System Life-Cycle Engineering

3sK’s approach to safety critical embedded systems engineering is to ensure product development processes conform to industry standards, agile enough to meet ongoing customer change requests and having the rigour to produce the best in class and assure absence of unreasonable risk. This balanced approach offers our clients a competitive advantage over their competitors.

This is one of the primary drivers for 3sK to develop our Unified Development Framework® (UDF). UDF was created to integrate needs of Automotive SPICE®, ISO 15288 and ISO 26262. UDF currently offers these standards integrated as base practice. We are in the process of incorporating standards for security and non-automotive safety to UDF.

Any system development has a life-cycle, and life-cycles vary from industry to industry. Most automotive projects start with 70% carry over, reducing risk. However, not knowing what is carried over and lack of understanding of legacy systems can lead to integration issues between sub systems. 3sK recommends a methodical and systematic way to solve this industry wide problem.

3sK commences system development by understanding a systems context, its intended usage, produce-ability, transportation, needs for sales and marketing, and maintenance and disposal. All these phases of a system development life-cycle are part of 3sK’s UDF. It is important to recognise and capture needs and wants of each life-cycle stage. In some cases, requirements can be conflicting. Understanding conflicting requirements at an early phase of product development can de-risk against escalating cost and project delays.

3sK’s offering in systems engineering life-cycle is to integrate our five base practices to support system development through each stage. A systems project is covered from requirements gathering, managing a set of standards for certification, technical safety management, systems engineering management plan, risk register, project schedule all the way to a systems integration plan and verification plan. We have the competency and leadership capability to take a system through its various life-cycles.

We integrate a safety and failure mode avoidance culture all the way through the product life-cycle management. These techniques deployed at an early phase of a programme can significantly “left shift” the risk involved.

3sK’s approach will ensure that the product under development has capabilities to be “tuned” to customer needs. This is deployed through a calibration strategy within the product development life-cycle. 3sK’s calibration strategy is incorporated as a life-cycle state in our UDF.

3sK SE Practices

Based on the complexity of the project, we may recommend a model based system engineering (MBSE) approach using SysML. However, this is strictly based on assessment against value addition to the organisation.

All engineering artefacts are created with the view of “create once, reuse many” mantra. Product requirements and all artefacts created will be our customers Intellectual Property. 3sK strongly advocates to maximise reuse of artefacts created to gain cost and value advantage.

3sK understands the significance of transition from a traditional R&D to manufacturing environment. We have significant expertise in realising product from concept to industrialisation. We apply agile systems engineering to ensure product risk are surfaced and drive a production intended system requirement, software code, hardware platform as early as possible. We recommend a minimum stable product platform and processes to deploy agile system engineering.
